"If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go into hell, where the fire never goes out." (Mark 9:43)
As Jesus draws closer to Jerusalem and his own death, he grows more urgent and his language grows more dramatic. His point is not that we should literally attempt surgery on ourselves, but that there are things within us—attitudes, habits, mistaken beliefs, wrong choices, guilty consciences, a sinful past—which keep us from drawing near to God and to the abundant life God wants us to have. As Lord and Savior, Jesus can free us from these things. But only if we invite Him to.
