Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.” (Mark 9:35)The cross of Christ utterly contradicts the world's notion of what has value. Who is great? Tycoons? Celebrities? Politicians? Military leaders? The popular kid in school? No. Seen from heaven, all these holders of worldly status are puny compared to the one who chooses to humble himself and serve his neighbor. The Cross is the only road that leads to eternal life. The one who travels that road turns away from what the world says is important, and turns toward the joy of grace.
