「今現在のわたしたちのアメリカ文化は、実は西洋キリスト教世界における退廃的なことを代表している。西洋文化を根本から堕落させた「３重の否定」に基づいているようである。すなわち、「形而上」の現実の否定、精神的なことの物質的なことに対する優位性の否定、そして社会の個人に対する優位性の否定．．．その最も印象的な特徴は、その全くの唯物主義である。その国民に対して、暮らしに必要なものを何も惜しまず与えているが、命を献げるような価値のあるものは何も提供していない。そして何を達成したかというと、こういうことが言える：大陸を手にして自らの魂を失ってしまったのである。」
