"yes" and everything else

The response to God's offer of forgiveness, mercy, and love in Christ is not something we get to make up as we see fit. It's like when someone proposes marriage. There's "Yes" and there's everything else, which is "not Yes". In Christ, God both proposes and promises love--engagement and wedding combined. The "Yes" is clearly defined in Scripture: faith (complete trust in Jesus Christ), repentence, baptism, and the intention, with God's help, to live a life of obedience (or at least try one's level best). That's it. Anything else is "not Yes". That means a "decision for Christ" is, biblically speaking, not yet a "Yes"--find some water somewhere, finish what you started! Much less is something along the lines of "I'm so thankful for the love God has shown me, and I will try never to forget this feeling of gratitude." That's a "not Yes." You're flattered, but your Suitor is still on His knees, waiting.

autosurgery?

"If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go into hell, where the fire never goes out." (Mark 9:43)
As Jesus draws closer to Jerusalem and his own death, he grows more urgent and his language grows more dramatic. His point is not that we should literally attempt surgery on ourselves, but that there are things within us—attitudes, habits, mistaken beliefs, wrong choices, guilty consciences, a sinful past—which keep us from drawing near to God and to the abundant life God wants us to have. As Lord and Savior, Jesus can free us from these things. But only if we invite Him to.

the little way

Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.” (Mark 9:35)
The cross of Christ utterly contradicts the world's notion of what has value. Who is great? Tycoons? Celebrities? Politicians? Military leaders? The popular kid in school? No. Seen from heaven, all these holders of worldly status are puny compared to the one who chooses to humble himself and serve his neighbor. The Cross is the only road that leads to eternal life. The one who travels that road turns away from what the world says is important, and turns toward the joy of grace.

Human beings are hard-wired to worship, even if they don't worship God.

That's why you can find imitation worship all over the place. Crowds of people straining to get a glimpse, maybe even touch the clothes, of a movie star. A room packed full of sweaty young "otaku" geeks doing para-para dancing with anime voice-actresses in Akihabara. Live shows and rock concerts. Three-month booked up tours of the Sky Tree. The Electric Parade at Disneyland.

These things are human approximations of real worship. They try to satisfy man's longing to worship something greater than himself, something from which he derives his existence and the meaning of his existence.

But in all these cases, the object of the worship is not God. And so there is no genuine encounter with Life involved. The glow of worship fades, the emotional high dies away, and no heart is changed.

The object of real worship is God. And to encounter God is to be changed forever.

wanting more (John 6: 37-51)

The setting for the Gospel is the outskirts of Capernaum, a city on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. The people were flocking to Jesus, coming to be fed, to be healed. They were doing the right thing, but for—if not the wrong reasons, at least inadequate reasons.

What they were seeking from Jesus was a solution to their immediate needs. But they should have been seeking something so much more valuable.

Just the day before, the people had seen Jesus feed a crowd of maybe 10,000 with a handful of food—or if they didn't see it themselves they heard about it soon enough. This was truly something amazing. Unheard of.

And everybody knew Jesus possessed great healing powers. All throughout the region of Galilee, many thousands of people had been healed by Jesus' touch. Jesus himself didn't want to be thought of as a miracle worker, but that had become his image anyway. News about his power to heal sickness and to drive out evil spirits had spread far and wide.

So, more and more people sought out Jesus. And notice that Jesus didn't refuse them:
"All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away" (John 6:37).

In his work, Jesus made it abundantly clear that God is concerned about people's immediate needs. He taught his followers to pray: "Give us this day our daily bread" (Matt 6:11). And He showed compassion for the plight of people around Him.

So when hungry people came to Jesus, He fed them. When sick people came to Jesus, He healed them. When people who were troubled by the dark forces that keep humanity in bondage came to Jesus, He freed them. He never refused people.
+   +   +
At the same time, Jesus knew that there was so much more than this. What the people in Capernaum were seeking from Jesus was a solution to their immediate needs. But they should have been seeking Jesus himself:
"I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever" (John 6:51).

Living bread. The bread of life. The bread that came down from heaven.

The Bible speaks of two kinds of life. On the one hand, there is the biological functioning of an organism—sleeping, eating, breathing, moving around. In Greek, this is bios.

But the life Jesus talks about is another kind of life altogether. He uses the word zoe.

This word zoe describes the quality of a life well lived. It means a life radiating with love and joy and peace. Those who have zoe-life are fully alive, fully human, fully themselves. They delight in using their gifts, delight in having fruitful relationships with others.

Alone among all the creatures, God gave this zoe-life to man. In Genesis we read:
"Then the LORD God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature" (Genesis 2:7).

So zoe-life comes from God, and is sustained by communion with God. Our first parents, Adam and Eve, had this life, because God gave it to them and because they were living in intimate communion with God.

But sin cuts us off from zoe-life because sin separates us from God. When we turn our backs on God, we turn our backs on abundant life as well.

So when Adam and Eve sinned, they lost their zoe-life. Even though they didn't die physically, at least not right away, they lost the abundant life that comes from God. Although they were still breathing, they were already dead inside.
+   +   +
That's how human beings are. That's our human situation. Just like the people in Capernaum 2,000 years ago, we, too, are heirs of Adam and Eve. We long for zoe-life, and yet we don't possess it.

Without the life that comes from God, we are dead inside. Our hearts are beating, we seem alive on the outside, but our inward selves do not have life.

This is the deepest hunger in the human heart, even though many people don't recognize it: abundant life.

We long to live well. To radiate love and joy and peace. To be fully alive, fully ourselves. We long to find joy in using our unique gifts, in making a contribution to the bettering of this world. We long for rich friendships with others.

And yet our longings remain unfulfilled. Abudant life eludes our grasp.

We turn to all sorts of other things to try and simulate the zoe-life we long for. Material goods. Work. Sex. Pleasure. Entertainment.

But nothing works. Nothing lasts. Nothing really satisfies our heart hunger.
+   +   +
Jesus said that the very reason He came to earth was to restore to human beings the zoe-life that we had lost:
"I came that they may have life and have it abundantly" (John 10:10)

This was the will of the Father from the beginning:
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16)

Or as we read this morning:
"My Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day" (John 6:40).

If zoe-life comes from God, from communion with God, that means that it can't be interrupted by anything, even by death. That's why Jesus calls it eternal life—not because it is life after death, but because it is life that is not changed by death.

Jesus came to earth to restore to human beings the zoe-life that we had lost. And He does this by offering us His own life:
"I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world" (John 6:53).

Jesus gives to the world the life that He has. From the cross, He offers His life to anyone who'll have it. Whoever eats this bread, that is to say, whoever receives Jesus by faith.

Anyone! It doesn't matter where you've been or what you've done.

Anyone! Those who have somehow been muddling along through life, and those who have made a real mess of things. Anyone! Those who have been seeking something for a long time and those who haven't even known that they should be seeking.

Anyone. You, me. Whosoever "looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life" (John 6:40).
+   +   +
It is good for us to come to church, to come to Jesus, asking to be fed, asking to be healed, asking for God's help in meeting our immediate needs. God wants us to come to Him. He wants us to ask for His help. He is our loving Father.

But we should also seek what is so much more valuable—we should seek abundant life, eternal life. Which is to say, we should seek Jesus Himself.

Look to the Son. Look to Jesus. Believe that He is your life. Entrust your life to Him. If you want to do that but don't know how, let's talk later. It's not hard.

If you look to Jesus and believe in Him, He will give you eternal life—abundant life, life with God, life which begins today and never ends.

At the very beginning, Jesus established at the center of the community of His followers this meal, this Eucharist. In it, we receive the bread that Jesus called His Body, and the wine that Jesus called His Blood.

Let us pray. Lord, we long to have abundant life. Open our hearts. Make us ever more hungry to receive the bread that comes from heaven. Deepen our hunger, Lord, and draw us to yourself. Amen.

anything can happen

"They were completely amazed, for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened" (Mark 6:51b-52)
The disciples witnessed about 10,000 people get fed with just five loaves of bread, but still didn't understand. Many of us don't understand this account either, taking it as some little morality tale about sharing. But the feeding account has nothing to do with sharing and everything to do with who Christ is. In Christ, our preconceptions about "possible" and "impossible" are shattered. When the Kingdom comes, anything can happen. No sin is unforgivable. No chains are unremovable. No difficulty is insurmountable. The King can walk on water. Surely he can save us.

the end of the world: an email exchange

I received the following email from a friend, a young Japanese woman who is a new Christian. She wrote in English. I have changed all names except mine and edited her email to take out information that might help identify her.

Subject: Ultimate question

Hi Kevin

I've been thinking the end of the world lately. It has been always on my mind.

And I just had a interesting conversation with my close friend, Joanne. She was told once that she could have sight, visions, and she told me about her dreams about the end of the world over and over.

I used to have a dream about it too. But not like hers. Not that detailed. But was about the end of world. That it will happen.

Lots of people were saying that December 21, 2012 will be the end. What is your honest opinion about that as a servant of God?

I personally wish it will come soon. So that we don't have to suffer any longer and the kingdom will come soon for the younger people and for all of us.

Like I told you I had a kind of crisis a little while ago. During that time, I went through very strange period. I had visions about the end of the world. Exactly like it was said in the Bible, in Revelation...I just wonder if I experienced this because I knew what was written or if it was a real vision.

Your honest opinion will be highly appreciated.

Love and Peace,
Always your younger sister,
May God always be with you,
Keiko xoxoxoxo

Hi Keiko,

In Matthew 24, Jesus talks about the end of the world. And then he says: "But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father" (Matthew 24:26). Not even Jesus himself knew.

Again, before he ascended to heaven, Jesus said to his followers: "It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority." (Acts 1:7)

It is good to think about the fact that there is an ending to the story of this world, that human history will not go on for ever and ever. And it is good to think about the fact that it is a VERY happy ending because God's will finally will be done on earth as in heaven.

And, like you, I long for Jesus to return soon, so that all the cruelty and suffering of the world would be over and I would stop having to struggle against temptations.

But it is pointless and maybe a little presumptuous (厚かましい) to try to know the day and hour of the end. If even the Bible doesn't tell us when, we certainly shouldn't pay attention to ancient Mayan calendars or modern day "prophets" who claim to know more than God has allowed us to know.

Not even Jesus knew when the end of the world would happen. He didn't need to know. Neither do we. All we have to do is to live our lives each day so that when the end comes, we will be ready to greet our Lord with joy and thanksgiving.

Because we know, we have been promised, that when the end comes, those who have believed that Jesus died and rose again, those who have entrusted their lives to the mercy and grace of God, "will be with the Lord forever" (1 Thessalonians 4:17). We have hope, because we know Jesus, and Jesus has shown us the heart of the Father, who is the Author of History, in command of all things.

C.S. Lewis, who wrote the Narnia books, was once asked what he would do if he knew the world would end tomorrow. He said: "I would plant a tree." All the "trees" we plant in this life--all the little acts of kindness, mercy and love that we show, all the beauty we help create, all the prayers we raise up to heaven for people in need, all the temptations we resist for God's sake--all of this will have a place in the new creation. Nothing good will be lost.

So, I think you and I should live our lives so that, if the end comes tomorrow, we will be ready. But we should really LIVE our lives--"I came so that they would have life, and have it abundantly," Jesus said (John 10:10). God wants us to enjoy life, enjoy Him, enjoy our fellowship with His Son, enjoy our fellowship with each other.

If your visions or thoughts about the end of the world rob you of this joy, that might be a sign that they are not "of God." Christians of all people ought to live lives radiant with joy and thanksgiving and hope. Because we know! We have been promised eternal life. And "in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells. So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him" (2 Peter 3:13-14).

Go well, my friend.

Peace with Him,
Kevin

you ain't seen nothing yet (Mark 6:1-6)

Sixth Sunday After Pentecost (Year B)
St. Luke's International Hospital Chapel
July 8, 2012– 10:30 a.m. Holy Eucharist

We read in Mark's Gospel this morning: "Jesus was amazed at their lack of faith" (Mark 6:6). I wonder what Jesus would think about our faith…

Let's take a minute to get the big picture of what's going on here. Jesus was sent by God to save mankind from the bondage of evil. Are you with me so far? Look around, the world isn't supposed to be like this. Won't God do something about it? He has, and that "something" is Jesus.

Even before Jesus was born, his mission was clear. The angel Gabriel told both Mary and Joseph: "You are to call the child 'Jesus'" (Luke 1:31; Matthew 1:21). His name means "God saves" or "God heals"—the original word has both meanings. And both are true: God is interested in our bodies as much as our souls.

So that's the mission assigned to the Son of God. But when the Son came into the world, He came as a man, 100% human. He gave up all power and privilege as the Son— "though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor" (2 Corinthians 8:9).

So Jesus was fully human, like you and me. Although unlike us, He enjoyed unbroken communion with the heavenly Father. Sin breaks or blocks the connection between us and God, but Jesus was without sin. So He lived always knowing the love of God, always taking delight in doing the will of God.

In all other respects, though, He was pretty much a normal guy. A 1st century Palestinian Jew who learned carpentry from his step-father, Joseph. That's why we hear almost nothing about Jesus' life growing up. He lived a normal life in Nazareth, a town of maybe a few hundred people, and worked construction in the area.

But then, at around age 30, Jesus goes off to be baptized by his cousin, John the Baptist. At his baptism, we read that Jesus is filled with the Holy Spirit, and hears a voice from heaven saying to him: "You are my Son, my beloved" (Mark 1:11).

This is where things really kick off. Jesus has always known the Father's love, always known He had a mission to do in the world. But at last, He has the POWER to do it.

The Holy Spirit is the source of Jesus' power. NOT his special status as the Son of God. He put all that aside: "Though he was in the form of God, Christ did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men" (Phil 2:6-7). So Jesus came into the world as a tiny baby born in a stable. For the first 30 years of His life, Jesus never performed any healings or other miracles. He was a normal guy.

But now, as a normal guy, He is filled with the Holy Spirit. So now He can get to work.

Jesus goes back to His hometown, Nazareth. He's probably eager to share the good news with the people He grew up with. Mark's Gospel is heavy on the action, but Luke reports what Jesus said in his hometown synagogue. He reads from the Book of Isaiah:
"God's Spirit is on me. He's chosen me to proclaim good news to the poor. He sent me to announce freedom for prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind. He sent me to set the oppressed free. To announce 'This is God's year to act!'" (Luke 4:18-19)

Jesus tells His fellow Nazarenes: What Isaiah said 400 years ago is happening NOW. God is on the move. God has launched His big rescue operation, to free us from our enslavement to the powers that control this world. God's Kingdom is advancing, the kingdom of darkness is receding.

And all of this is starting with Yours Truly.

And they're all like, huh? What is he TALKING about? Where does he get off talking that way? He's just a construction worker! We know his family!

"And they took offense at him" (Mark 6:2-3).

The people of Nazareth can't imagine that someone who grew up in their little hamlet could be the promised Savior. Familiarity breeds contempt. They know Jesus too well; He can't be special.

Besides, for more than 20 years Jesus lived in Nazareth and never did miracles before. He never claimed to be the Savior before.
+   +   +
It's never happened before. It's always been this way. These are phrases one often hears in church.

I grew up in a Christian family but left the faith in high school. When I came back to Christ, one thing I was forced to realize was that, although I thought I already knew all about God and Jesus and Christianity, in fact, I didn't. I had to start from the beginning and reask the basic questions, relearn so many things. I'm still learning.

And I had to open my mind to the possibility that God could do new and unexpected things. Eventually I had to open my mind to the possibility that God wanted to do new and unexpected things IN MY LIFE.

Look around you. Do you know anybody here? We're a fairly normal lot, don't you think? A few of us are a bit strange, but…all and all, plain vanilla.

Do you think God is capable of doing something new and unexpected through the people gathered here today?

Do you think God is capable of doing something new and unexpected through you?
+   +   +
What changed in Jesus' life was that He was filled and empowered by the Holy Spirit.

But it was never only about Jesus. Next week, we'll read about Jesus sending out the Twelve Disciples to do exactly the same thing that He's doing: proclaim the good news of the Kingdom, and heal the sick and deliver people from evil powers:
"They went out and preached that people should repent. They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them" (Mark 6:12-13).

In this way, God's Kingdom advances, and the kingdom of darkness recedes.

And it's not just the Twelve, either. Later, Jesus sends out Seventy Two plain vanilla disciples—we don't even know their names: Proclaim the good news and heal the sick.

And after Pentecost, the mission continues. First Peter and John, then Philip, then Annanias, then Paul—and on and on, Jesus' followers go out to the ends of the earth. Always doing two things: Proclaiming the good news of the Kingdom, the good news that God is acting to rescue mankind from enslavement to evil, and then backing up their proclamation by praying for people to be healed and set free from bondage.

Tertullian, a Church leader of the early 3rd century, urged all Christians to continue in the ministry of Jesus. He said the noblest life is "to exorcise evil spirits—to perform cures—to live to God."

(Tertullian even argued that doing such things was more exciting than going to plays or sports events! (Tertullian, "De Spectaculis," Ch. 29) If I told you that praying for people was more exciting than watching the Olympics, would you believe me?)
+   +   +
Jesus focused on a ministry of healing and deliverance to clearly show that God's Kingdom was advancing, and the kingdom of darkness was receding. It wasn't just words, it was His words backed up by His actions. Through His ministry, lives were changed. Through the ministry of His followers, lives were changed.

The source of power for Jesus' followers is the same source as for Jesus Himself: the Holy Spirit. If we are to follow Jesus, we need to be filled with the Holy Spirit just as Jesus was.

We need the Holy Spirit for two reasons. First, we need the Holy Spirit to change us. "The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control" (Galatians 5:22-23). The Holy Spirit works on our hearts to make us more like Jesus, more full of life, more open to God's joy and peace.

But we also need the Holy Spirit so that we can really help people. The Spirit gives us courage to pray boldly for people who are in need, wisdom to give counsel to those who have lost their way, love to encourage those who are anxious or in doubt.

Without the Spirit, we can be kind and supportive. With the Spirit we can see people being healed and lives changed. That's the difference.

But perhaps most of all we need the Spirit to open our eyes and our hearts to the plans God has in store for us. God is capable of doing something new and unexpected through this chapel, through us, through you, through me.

Come, Holy Spirit, and help us to believe in our hearts what we say with our lips:
"Glory to God whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine: Glory to him from generation to generation in the Church, and in Christ Jesus for ever and ever. Amen" (Ephesians 3:20,21, at the end of the Eucharistic Prayer)

two highlights

Highlight 1:
The other day, I met a woman I've known for years, from the time she found out she had breast cancer through to its total remission. There were some signs that the cancer might be back. She was waiting for test results, nervous. "God, may all her results be negative" I prayed with her, even as my mind filled up with all sorts of scenarios. Yesterday, she stopped by my office with great news: "No relapse." We just stood there for a long, long time, grinning like monkeys and shaking hands.

Highlight 2:
For the past six months I've enjoyed getting to know a patient in the palliative care unit, an elder brother in Christ. A Protestant, he loves Mass, and often took part in our Sunday worship, hospital bed and all. He was quietly called to be with the Lord this morning. When I went to say goodbye, the realization that I would no longer regularly be seeing him or his family made me suddenly sad. I went back in the afternoon for the send-off. And, just as if the patient were still alive, the family and nurses and doctors and I all gathered around his bed, laughing and smiling as we took one last photograph. No, not "just as if"--he IS still alive. "Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.” (Revelation 14:13)

「How Deep the Father's Love for Us」という賛美歌が好き。

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKDujmtyAVk

How Deep the Father's Love for Us
Written by Stuart Townend

How deep the Father's love for us,
 how vast beyond all measure
That he should give his only son,
to make a wretch his treasure
How great the pain of searing loss,
the Father turns his face away
As wounds which mar the chosen one,
 bring many sons to glory

Behold the man upon a cross,
 my sin upon his shoulders
Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice
 call out among the scoffers
It was my sin that held him there
 until it was accomplished
His dying breath has brought me life;
I know that it is finished

I will not boast in anything:
no gifts, no power, no wisdom
But I will boast in Jesus Christ;
 his death and resurrection
Why should I gain from his reward?
 I cannot give an answer
But this I know with all my heart:
his wounds have paid my ransom

a showdown at the harbor (Acts 13:4-12)

Led by the Holy Spirit, Paul and Barnabas preach their way across the island of Cyprus, Barnabus' home, and make a long stay in Paphos, a port on the west coast of the island. "The proconsul, Sergius Paulus" (v. 7) summons Paul and Barnabas to hear their message, which must have been causing quite a stir.

As Roman citizen, Paul is well-suited to establish a rapport with Sergius Paulus, which he uses to tell him the Good News about Jesus Christ. Paulus, "an intelligent man" (v. 7), is impressed by Paul's message, and is nearly ready to accept faith in Jesus. But then Bar-Jesus, the proconsul's Jewish counsellor and fortune-teller, steps in to interfere.

Filled with the wisdom of the Holy Spirit (v. 9), Paul can see what's going on: Bar-Jesus is operating under an evil influence. Satan (=the force of darkness that opposes God and His works) hates it when people come to believe in Christ—the devil doesn't want us to receive the forgiveness or healing or salvation or eternal life that God wants to give us. Forces that try to turn people away from the winsomness of Christ are finally demonic.

Bar-Jesus means "son of salvation," but Paul perceives that Elymas is really "a child of the devil" (v. 10)—i.e. acting as a proxy for the devil.

Serious problems require serious remedies, just as a brain tumor requires radical treatment. Paul declares the remedy that God will take in this situation: Bar-Jesus will be temporarily blinded. In other words, his inward spiritual blindness will be made clear and concrete in the form of temporary physical blindness.

When Paul declares this: "Immediately mist and darkness came over him" (v. 11=Luke the physician is here using contemporary medical language to describe the scene).

Paul surely recalls his own experience of being blinded on the road to Damascus, which changed his life. God does not cause sickness, although He may allow inward spiritual disorders to take on outward physical form. But God certainly does use times of sickness and physical and mental distress to bring about great change in us, fresh awareness, renewed resolution to live in consonance with His will.

The proconsul is deeply impressed because both the words and the actions of Paul reflect the reality of God. And so, Paul leads Paulus to Christ, his first Gentile convert.
