"Crowd: 'Crucify him!'" (Mark 15:13)
Every year in the Palm Sunday worship, we are made to say the above words, this terrible blasphemy. It is our role to cry out for the death of the most beautiful, most pure Son of God. One meaning of Jesus' passion is that God's hand of mercy reaches out to human beings even at the depths of our suffering and lostness. But another meaning is this: We, too--as we scorn God's will, lead self-absorbed lives, wound the lives of others as well as our own--we ourselves are complicit in the passion. As we enter "Holy Week," one of our tasks is to consider how we add to the suffering of Christ, the Lord of Life.
